Shilpa Shetty (born 8 June 1975) is an Indian actress and model. She made her film debut in the 1993 film, Baazigar, and her first leading role was in the 1994 film, Aag. She has subsequently appeared in more than three dozen other Indian language films.
In the United Kingdom, Shilpa Shetty is best known for her appearance in the 2007 series of Celebrity Big Brother. This was a particularly controversial series of the program, as there were allegations that Shilpa Shetty was the target of racism and bullying by other members of the Big Brother household - and these issues were even discussed in the British parliament!
Later in 2007, Shetty was involved in another controversy when the Hollywood actor, Richard Gere, kissed her on the cheek during an AIDS-awareness event in New Delhi. This was perceived by some as an attack on Indian cultural values, and led to a number of protests around the country.
