  • The Hindu scriptures, and ancient Indians, showed a remarkable knowledge of the Earth.

  • Rig Veda describes the shape of the Earth as being an oblate spheroid (a description consistent with that of modern science). Markandeya Purana also describes the Earth as being flattened at the poles.

  • The spherical Earth is also described as standing in space (again, consistent with modern science), and according to some, this was even depicted in some ancient pictures.

  • The Hindu scriptures state that people live on the surface on the Earth.

  • The great Indian mathematician and astronomer, Arjabhatta (476 to 550 CE), wrote that the Earth is spherical, that the Earth rotates on its axis daily, and the apparent movement of the star is caused by the rotation of the Earth on its axis. Note: He wrote this almost 1,000 years before Copernicus and Galileo!

  • Another great Indian mathematician, Brahmagupta (598 to 668 CE) gave the circumference of the Earth as being 36,000 kilometers (modern science gives a figure of 40,075 km).

  • Markandeya Purana states the the blue is sky is simply caused by the scattering of sunlight (an effect we know in modern science as the Rayleigh effect).
